I definitely agree with your views on family versus friends... I have come to the realization in the past year that my family are not to be relied upon. They don't particularly trust one another when it boils down to the hard situations, on my father's side, and on my mother's, there is so much enmity between siblings that was created by my grandparents' abusing them that they cannot possibly be there for one another in times of need without clawing at each other's throats. I realize also that, much as I see my dad's side of the family at the usual Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter gatherings--I really don't know them. We do not make an attempt to get to know each other, and we are not close. If for example someone in the family died, I would be the last to know. I don't know if it's my fault for being isolated or theirs for just not liking me, but I always feel like the one weirdo no one really gives a shit about. I know my friends would be quicker to help if I were in conflict than my parents or anyone else in the family, because where they don't know me, my friends DO--and can help. So I agree entirely...and I'm glad you have friends who can support you, should you need it.
